June 12, 2016- "Using Poetry to Give Young Adults with Disabilities a Voice"- A poetry class at Arlington County’s Program for Employment Preparedness recently had a recital. Of the 42 students in the program, 13 stood on stage in front of an audience of their peers, parents, and educators who watched eagerly as they recited their prose. The event caught the eye of U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera who was quoted in the program as saying “I am so honored to hear that you are creating poetry!” Students from the class not only learned more about poetry, but came to learn and understand their peers better.
