March 25, 2016- "How Gender Stereotypes Prevent Women with Autism from Unmasking their True Selves"- Kay Locke, 50, waited 41 years for her autism diagnosis and believes preconceived notions surrounding the disorder causes many females on the spectrum to go unnoticed. While Locke herself expected her diagnosis, her friends and acquaintances were more taken aback by the revelation, often replying that Locke does not look like or act like someone with autism. While there is no one way to look or act like you have autism, their responses illustrate how the stereotypes of the disorder are still prevalent today.
